Welcome to Gilbert Heights Elementary School
Introducing our new mural
Walk into the Kindergarten-First Grade hallway of Gilbert Heights Elementary School and you will be greeted by a beautiful new mural. The mural was completed by Alex Chiu, a parent from our school district and local professional artist who does large murals at transit centers, businesses, MAX stations, elementary schools, etc.
Shannon Deems, Principal of Gilbert Heights Elementary, reported "The mural depicts the diversity of Gilbert Heights students, representing children of different cultural backgrounds and abilities all working together to create the Gilbert Heights Logo. The letters surrounding the children spell out the word “LEARN.” The message of the mural is to promote inclusion, collaboration, and the importance of education."
“The content of the mural is from a photoshoot taken in Mr. Kephart’s kindergarten class in 2019. The photoshoot explored the theme of art and creativity. Not all of the students in the painting are based directly on Gilbert Heights students and portraits are not meant to be accurate depictions of individual students”
The mural was painted with acrylic paint on Polytab fabric and pasted on the wall. This is a common way to create a mural offsite without painting directly onto the wall - a convenient method during this COVID pandemic.
Our thanks to Alex Chiu for creating this beautiful mural for Gilberts Heights and to Steve Kephart, the David Douglas teacher who requested the DDEF grant used to fund this project.
