Battle of the Books
We received a nice thank you note and some photos from the Ron Russell Middle School from their Battle of the Books class that we had supported through our spring grants program. We are so happy to support programs like this in our district!
Hi DDEF,
I'm writing to thank you for your Spring 2019 grant to Ron Russell so we could purchase books for our Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) SUN class. During the fall and winter, we had 10 students participate in our OBOB class. The student really enjoyed the books. One student told me she, "enjoyed these books so much more than last year's list." The students read the books and then we played different games to learn the content. We played Kahoot or a matching game, where students needed to match a picture of the book cover to the author's name. I've included two pictures of the students working together on the author/title game. We had a special opportunity to meet one of the authors this year. Our principal was able to help us fund a visit with Alexandra Diaz, author of The Only Road. She spent a day speaking to classes at our school, and then had lunch with the kids in the OBOB SUN class. Attached are a few pictures from that lunch. The plan now for the books is to use them in the library for students. Some copies of the titles will go into our traditional library circulation. Other copies will be available for students to use at school, without needing to formally check them out. I'm excited to continue to share these great books with our students. Unfortunately, our tournament was scheduled for March 14 and was ultimately cancelled. I don't know what next year will bring but I hope I'll be able to bring a group of students to participate then. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Carin Rosenberg
